PT Central Omega Resources Tbk (“COR” or the “Company”), a nickel mining company listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange under the ticker code DKFT, has officially commenced operations of a hybrid off-grid solar power plant (PLTS) at its mining operations in North Morowali, Central Sulawesi. The project was developed in collaboration with PT Xurya Daya Indonesia (“Xurya”), a leading solar energy solutions provider in Indonesia, serving as the project developer and technical expert partner.
With this inauguration, COR becomes a pioneer in the use of hybrid off-grid solar power in the nickel mining sector in North Morowali — a strategic step that places the company at the forefront of renewable energy transformation in Indonesia’s mineral mining industry. Through the implementation of this system, COR is taking concrete steps toward lower-emission mining operations while supporting the development of a more sustainable mineral supply chain, in line with growing global demand for low-carbon certified nickel, particularly for electric vehicle (EV) and battery supply chains.
Dr. dr. Delis Julkarson Hehi, MARS, Regent of North Morowali, Central Sulawesi Regional Government, said, “North Morowali has significant potential to utilize solar energy, supported by its high solar radiation potential. This potential is increasingly relevant following the President’s direction to encourage the development of up to 100 GW of solar power capacity. The regional government is also promoting the development of solar power plants across North Morowali as part of this broader effort. We therefore appreciate COR’s initiative to implement solar power in its mining operations. COR’s initiative should serve as an example for other mining companies in the region to take part in the energy transition.”
The hybrid off-grid solar power system is expected to generate 404,230 kWh of clean energy annually, directly replacing a portion of the fossil-fuel-based energy used in COR’s mining operations in North Morowali. From an environmental perspective, this achievement is equivalent to reducing 343,595.5 kg of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions annually — equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of 3,902 trees — while reducing coal consumption by up to 272 kg. The clean energy generated is also equivalent to the charging needs of 5,630 electric vehicles (EVs), demonstrating the scale of the system’s contribution to the broader renewable energy ecosystem, including the EV supply chain, which is one of the downstream destinations of Indonesia’s nickel industry.
Andi Jaya, Director of PT Central Omega Resources Tbk, explained, “The implementation of this hybrid off-grid solar power system demonstrates that the utilization of renewable energy is not merely an aspiration, but can be practically implemented in mining operations. The solar power system helps COR become more energy self-sufficient and, in turn, supports more sustainable mining activities. We hope this initiative will encourage other mining companies to take the next step and begin implementing solar power to meet their operational energy needs.”
As a mining company operating in an area with limited access to the national electricity grid, COR faces unique challenges in ensuring a stable and cost-efficient energy supply. The hybrid off-grid scheme developed together with Xurya — combining solar power with existing generation systems — is designed to operate optimally without disrupting production continuity, while reducing fossil fuel consumption across mining operations.
Eka Himawan, Managing Director of Xurya, said, “The use of hybrid off-grid solar power at PT Central Omega Resources Tbk represents an important step in demonstrating that solar energy can be integrated into mining operations that require reliable and continuous energy supply, particularly in areas with limited access to the electricity grid. As a pioneer project in North Morowali, this project demonstrates that solar power systems can be designed to meet the specific characteristics and operational requirements of mining activities without compromising energy reliability. The implementation of solar power also highlights the growing opportunities for renewable energy to support the transformation of Indonesia’s mining industry.”
The Indonesian Government continues to promote the increased role of renewable energy in the national energy mix and in the supply chains of downstream mineral industries, including nickel, as part of its commitment to achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060. Amid growing global market demands — particularly from the EV and battery industries — for lower carbon footprints throughout the nickel supply chain, the utilization of solar energy at mining sites presents a relevant, flexible, and scalable solution that can be implemented progressively according to operational needs.
The inauguration of the hybrid off-grid solar power plant at COR’s mining site in North Morowali demonstrates that the energy transition can be broadly adopted and integrated into mineral mining operations, while further strengthening COR’s position as a nickel producer committed to responsible and sustainable mining practices.
